When Sex/Life was released in 2021, it might as well have been considered a proof of concept. Sexy softcore TV series aimed at women are winners for streaming services and often set viewing records. Case in point: On September 27, 2021, it was reported that 67 million households watched the first season of Sex/Life in its first four weeks of release. So distraught was one male reviewer that he called it the ‘pornification of Netflix.’
Hot on the stilettos of Sex/Life was Sexify, a raunchy and surprisingly charming 2021 Polish comedy that became an international smash after rocketing up the network’s most-watched charts around the globe. Created and written by Agata Koshmieder and Magorzata Biedroska, with direction by Piotr Domalewski, the show centers around three female university students who form an unlikely alliance while navigating a range of college girl issues – including the lack of quality carnal pleasure.
Natalia is a brilliant computer whiz, but she’s an introvert. She’s working on an app to enhance female orgasms, but because she’s also very sexually inexperienced, she seeks advice from Paulina. Paulina is in a committed relationship, torn between her Catholicism and sexual awakening. Wild-girl classmate Monika is having loads of unsatisfying sex with anyone she wants until she realizes she deserves better and joins up in the app’s development.
It is stunning how well Sexify’s first episode fleshes out the main characters’ lives before ever bringing them together. While Sexify doesn’t hold back when it comes to lots of casual fucking – it also makes it clear early on that this isn’t going to be exploitative. We follow the journeys of the three leading ladies – both sexual and non-sexual – which bring them closer together. Sexify isn’t just about getting naked and having sex; its effectiveness comes from female friendships at its core.
